Promo: Terry Funk Attacks Ric Flair – WrestleWar 1989 (Post-Match Angle)
Context
Ric Flair had just finished a 40 min + match against Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlewar 89 when Terry Funk interrupted his interview with Jim Ross to congratulate him personally. Funk had recently returned to the NWA after time in Hollywood and was working as a judge for the title match between Flair and Steamboat.
Funk snaps after Ric Flair dismisses him as a genuine title challenger, kicking off one of the best feuds and matches of the 80’s. Flair vs Funk, the I Quit Match. Funk’s promo/interaction with Flair quickly turns from guest judge to crazy madman, showing glimpses of his future personas used in ECW and the WWF. A great example of someone being able to turn an angle red hot in a matter of minutes with little to no build.
Did You Know?
The pile driver table spot was seen as highly dangerous and probably took the angle to another level at the time. Look out for it.
Why You Should Watch
This moment reignited Flair vs. Funk — one of the greatest feuds of the 1980s. Two of the best working together to show how performers can create genuine heat and interest in a matter of moments. A real skill.
Where Can You See It?
At time of writing WWE doesn’t have has the promo on their official Youtube Channel.
If you search Flair Steamboat Wrestler 89 you should be able to find the segment at the end of the match.
