Match: Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart – WrestleMania 13 (1997)
Context
By 1997 Steve Austin was gaining huge popularity as the anti hero of the WWF. He would go on to face one of the company’s top champions in Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 13 in a submission match. With UFC, mixed martial artist Ken Shamrock bringing a big fight feel as the special guest referee. The match felt legitimate from the off and was instantly a physical battle between WWF’s current and future main event stars. Austin and Hart brawled in and out the ring and executed what many believe is the greatest double turn in wrestling history. By the time the match was over, Austin was bigger than ever. While Bret Hart was able to start going down a different path with The Hart Foundation as a heel.
Did You Know?
Austin found out it was a submission match watching TV like everyone else. He wasn’t happy as he didn’t have any submission moves of his own at that time.
Why You Should Watch
A Wrestlemania classic that put both men on different paths once the match was over. Bret Hart was at the beginning of a heel turn and Steve Austin was building as a mega resilient babyface. A masterful double turn that helped further propel Stone Cold Steve Austin towards superstardom. A must watch Wrestlemania classic.
